Wilderness Little Makalolo, Southern Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
Wilderness Little Makalolo lies in one of Hwange’s most ecologically-diverse areas, ensuring both variety and numbers of animals year round. A large number of waterholes attracts game from far and wide, and with one in front of camp, wildlife activity can even be enjoyed from the pool or your breakfast table or, more intimately, from the camp’s log-pile hide. Game drives, guided nature walks and cultural activities sometimes end at our “pizza stop” at Madison Pan; a Star Bed allows for a sleep-out under the stars.
Hwange’s mix of different veld and landscape types means that game viewing is productive year-round. Wildlife frequently encountered in our area includes lions, large herds of elephant, buffalos, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyaenas, giraffes, sable, blue wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, and reedbuck. In summer, wildebeest, zebras, and eland are found in abundance on the open plains, while in winter elephant congregate in enormous numbers around the waterholes. Birdlife in the area is prolific (400+) and varied.
Set amongst the iconic albida trees that characterise the region, the camp is built on wooden decks offering three (or four for private bookings) airy and elegant tents conveying the romance of a bygone explorer era. The stylish living spaces, including a dining room and lounge as well as a plunge pool, all look out over the river towards the Zambian escarpment.
Enjoy a game drive, early in the morning or late afternoon, in an area renowned for its large numbers of elephant, buffalo, hippo and eland; along with lion, leopard and wild dog. Take in a coffee break or a sundowner at a scenic spot while your knowledgeable guide regales you with tales of safari bushlore.
